Annual Events

Day of Service

Since 2016, the OCCE has been able to successfully carry out a Day of Service during the fall semester where UNE community members come together for a full day of service throughout the Southern Maine region. This annual university-wide community service event grows each year to include a wider variety of local nonprofit organizations that act as service sites and provide projects that the UNE community can help out with.

Around 250 students participate in this event each year and serve at more than 20 service site locations. A few of the many organizations that have participated in the Day of Service include: Saco Food Pantry, YMCA of Northern York County, Partners For World Health, Kennebunk Parks and Rec, and Seeds of Hope.

This event provides UNE students with a great opportunity to meet new friends, explore the local community, help out for a good cause, and have fun while doing it! The Day of Service (DOS) is one of the largest University wide events of the year: with free food, fun DOS swag, and many raffle prizes for the student participants to potentially win.

UNE Service Fair

Early in the Fall semester, the annual UNE Service Fair brings over thirty local organizations and nonprofits to the University to inform and recruit student volunteers and interns. A few of the many organizations that attended include: Sweetser, United Way of York County, Heart of Biddeford, American Red Cross, and the Saco Salmon Restoration Alliance.

It is a networking opportunity for both students and organizations to answer questions about types of service, the path from volunteer service to career opportunities, and explore ways to give back to this wonderful community.

Winter Festival

Each year right before students go on holiday break, the College Community Mentoring and America Reads/America Counts members say a “goodbye for now” to the youth they work with. The festival is filled with holiday cheer with lots of fun games, tasty treats, and an educational opportunity for the kids to experience what giving back to their community entails.

UNE students, their mentees, and tutorees come together to create care packages for the York County Shelter Program. Items donated by local organizations go into the packages and are delivered to the shelters nearby. All attendees of the event wish the residents of the shelters “Happy Holidays!” in creative and thoughtful handmade cards to end the event.

Service Panel

Each year — typically during the Spring semester — the OCCE holds an event where community members from local organizations such as United Way York County, Americorps, Peace Corps, and many other organizations discuss their experience volunteering and the volunteering opportunities for students within their organizations. A staff moderator facilitates the event and students are able to ask questions in this open discussion panel.

Volunteer Resume Workshop

The Volunteer Resume Workshop event is put on in collaboration with the Career Services department, usually during the Spring semester. This event provides students with an opportunity to improve and update their resumes with their volunteer activities. Students are able to receive advice from Career Services personnel about the best ways to articulate their activities and how to link their service to future careers.
