Rethinking the Amistad Rebellion

Abstract: This talk explores the famous and dramatic rebellion by 53 Africans aboard a Cuban slave ship in 1839 - one of the very few such successful revolts in the history of the slave trade and one that had profound consequences in the United States around the Atlantic.

Brief Bio: Marcus Rediker is Distinguished Professor of Atlantic History at the University of Pittsburgh.  He is author of several prize-winning books, including (with Peter Linebaugh) The Many-Headed Hydra: Sailors, Slaves, Commoners and the Hidden History of the Revolutionary Atlantic (Beacon Press, 2000) and, most recently, The Slave Ship: A Human History (Viking-Penguin, 2007).
