Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan reposts sections of a column by Anouar Majid on 'Why America Matters to Muslims'

Noted journalist Andrew Sullivan in his column for the "Daily Beast," the online home of Newsweek magazine, re-posted sections of a column by Anouar Majid, Ph.D., UNE associate provost for global initiatives and director of the Center for Global Humanities, that had appeared in "Informed Comment."

Majid's original column is titled "Why America Matters to Muslims." Sullivan's Jan. 12, 2011 column titled "The American Rebranding Abroad," notes that "Anouar Majid thinks the protests have created a chance to revive our reputation in the Muslim world."

He quotes Majid: "One thing that is striking about the recent revolts in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Bahrain is the absence of any anti-American slogans or denunciations of the Great Satan, as the Iranian regime refers to Uncle Sam. On the contrary: signs of pro-American sensibilities abound. ... Democracy protesters carried homemade placards displaying slogans and statements (sometimes translated into French) of fundamental American rights."

Majid is the author of four critically acclaimed books on Islam and the West, including We Are All Moors: Ending Centuries of Crusades against Muslims and Other Minorities.
