Dr. James P. Dunn graduated from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine with a DMD degree in May, 1975. Upon graduation from Tufts, he was assigned to Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, North Carolina with the US Navy. During his active duty, he served on a Regimental Landing Team in Europe and also completed clinical rotations in Endodontics, Oral Surgery, and General Practice. After active duty, Dr. Dunn returned to Auburn, Maine to practice dentistry from 1977 to 2015, a total of 36 years. During this time, Dr. Dunn maintained his status in the US Army Reserves and completed several tours of active duty in Europe, South America, and Central America. His last assignment was Commander of the 287th Medical Company (DS). He retired in 2002 after 28 years of service with the rank of Colonel.

Dr. Dunn joined the faculty of the UNE College of Dental Medicine in 2013. Prior to retiring from private practice in 2015, Dr. Dunn successfully developed his Auburn dental practice into a totally paperless practice encompassing digital technology. Dr. Dunn is a member of the Maine Dental Association, Androscoggin Dental Association (past President), the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, and Pierre Fauchard Academy. He has also recently served as a volunteer instructor in the EFDA Program at York Community College in York, Maine.
