Brown Bag Discussion: Large Classes

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Alumni 107, Detmer

Open to UNE Faculty and Staff

Brown-Bag lunch sessions provide informal opportunities for faculty to gather together and share knowledge, resources and techniques for handling specific, complex teaching topics. The discussion will be facilitated by Marc Ebenfield, Director, CETL. Links to pertinent resources will be provided and follow-up sessions may be created for popular topics.

Large Classes

Large classes can promote a feeling of disengagement among students who feel like a number in the classroom- eroding their sense of responsibility and leading to behaviors such as missing class, not doing homework and cheating. Teachers, on the other hand, struggle with providing an interactive atmosphere, giving students rapid, responsive feedback and maintaining evidence-based practices used in smaller classes. What is a large class? What does the research say about learning in large classes and why do we switch teaching strategies when faced with more students? Come share your experiences and find ways to make that large class feel smaller.

Brown bag sessions will be held from 12:00-1:00 on both the Portland (Detmer, 103 Alumni) and Biddeford (3rd Floor Commons) campuses at the dates listed below. Online discussions will open on Sunday and close on Saturday the same week as the Face-to-Face sessions. Links to the online discussions will be sent the Friday before they open.
