The second edition of a book on child and family social work practice authored by Shelley Cohen Konrad PhD, LCSW, FNAP, director of the School of Social Work, professor in the School of Social Work, and director of the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC), is now available.

“Child and Family Practice: A Relational Perspective, Second Edition” presents important guidelines and principles for working with children, their families, and their service-providing organizations. It is grounded in social work theories of relationship, with emphasis on three core concepts: relational connection, evidence-guided knowledge, and reflexivity.

The book is designed to help students and workers connect theory to evidence-based practice. Cohen Konrad uses case studies drawn from her many years in practice to illustrate how relational methods are used with children and youth. The studies are perfect for experiential learning in the classroom and engaging in meaningful discussion.

Cohen Konrad's aim is to help students and workers connect science, theory, and the human qualities necessary to effect positive change and inspire hope in the lives of children and families.

New material in this edition includes expanded discussion on the implications of race and discrimination on children and youth, sections on trauma-informed practice and its supporting evidence as well as youth and substance use disorders, and updated research on autism.

“Child and Family Practice: A Relational Perspective, Second Edition” is published by Oxford University Press.
