The Center to Advance Interprofessional Education and Practice (CAIEP) at the University of New England has announced its spring semester programming, featuring a robust lineup of virtual Knowledge Exchange events.

The Knowledge Exchange events address contemporary issues with emphasis on strategies for interprofessional health care practice teamwork, when workers from multiple professions work together to improve health outcomes. Programming includes lectures and discussion groups featuring local and national experts from a variety of fields. All virtual events are free and open to the public.

Topics raise awareness of critical issues affecting health and include collaborative strategies for:

  • Advocacy's role in health care policy and legislation
  • Addressing the global nearsightedness epidemic through coordinated care
  • Improving clinical response to human trafficking
  • Supporting teens with disabilities transitioning to adult health care
  • Identifying misleading health and sustainability claims
  • Showcasing student-led interprofessional projects

In addition to virtual programming, the University will offer in-person interprofessional opportunities, including an Interprofessional Team Immersion event on screening, brief intervention and referral for treatment (SBIRT) for eating disorders, with limited in-person spots available for clinical preceptors who are based more than 50 miles away. Virtual attendance is open to the public.

Additional in person events include a team-based, interprofessional simulation at UNE’s Interprofessional Simulation and Innovation Center for UNE students; and student-led volunteer opportunities with community partners including Preble Street’s Food Security Hub and Partners for World Health.

CAIEP has been a key hub for interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice at UNE for 15 years and fosters teamwork among health care professionals and students through various initiatives, including the Knowledge Exchange events, immersive simulations, volunteer opportunities, and collaborative research projects.

The center engages with most health professions fields, as well as many arts and sciences programs, to enhance collaborative skills for clinical and community practice and improve health care for all. Knowledge Exchange events are offered to students for credit toward earning a nationally accredited digital credential, the Interprofessional Honors Distinction. Select Knowledge Exchanges offer continuing medical education and continuing education units for professionals.
