Students hoist help onto a UNE research vessel
A morning on the water turned into a lesson in Maine’s future workforce as UNE students harvested nearly 1,000 pounds of kelp from the University's sea farm this spring. From harvesting a new kelp variety to supplying a student-run enterprise, the annual tradition offered a hands-on look at Maine’s evolving working waterfront while providing valuable lessons in aquaculture, entrepreneurship, and the state's changing coastal economy.

UNE researcher fills gap in Gulf of Maine harbor porpoise data
Michelle Caputo, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the University of New England School of Marine and Environmental Programs and a conservation biologist, has launched a systematic effort to track harbor porpoises along the Maine coast, the first such research in at least 10 years.
