How to Develop a Badge

Submission Deadlines

Ideas should be submitted to the badge committee by the following dates for development during that semster:

  • Fall Semester: September 7
  • Summer Semester: June 7
  • Spring Semester: January 7

Badge Developer Approval Process

Step 1

If you have an idea for a badge, check in with your department chair, unit head, or program supervisor. Once you have received approval for development of your idea, send an email with a brief description of your concept attached using the Badge Idea Submission Form (PDF), to the badging committee at une-badging@une.edu. You can also submit your idea online.

The committee will assign you a mentor to help develop your idea and complete the Step 1 Badge Development form (PDF) and begin the approval process. Once complete, the form will be submitted to the committee for review.

Upon review, one of two things will happen:

  1. Your initial application will be approved and move on to Step 2 of development.
  2. Your application is not approved. Approval may not be granted for reasons that include redundancy to another badge, lack of appropriate rigor, or alignment with UNE Strategic Priorities. Once your proposal is appropriately revised, it is eligible for resubmission in the next round.

Submission dates will be posted at the beginning of the fall, spring, and summer semesters and are listed at the top of this page.

Step 2

Upon approval and completion of Step 1, developers will continue to work with the mentor(s) to further refine the competencies, related learning objectives, and learner activities to complete the Step 2 Badge Development form (PDF). The step 2 form is submitted to the committee for review.

Upon review, one of two things will happen:

  1. Your initial application will be submitted to the provost for final approval.
  2. Your application is not approved. Approval may not be granted for reasons that include redundancy to another badge, lack of appropriate rigor, or alignment with UNE Strategic Priorities. Proposals with the appropriate revision are eligible for resubmission in the next round. The purpose of the mentoring process is reduce unapproved applications.

Once approved by the provost the badge will move into Implementation.

Implementation

An icon will be created by the Office of Communications, and the Badge Coordinator, Karl Carrigan, will upload badge metadata and icon to the Credly platform. The badge is now ready to be issued by developers.

Upon completion of badge competencies, the badge is issued to the learners and they will receive an email that instructs them on how to accept the badge. The learner can share the badge via their preferred digital media platforms like Linked In, e-portfolios, Facebook, etc.

Review

Throughout the implementation phase, data on usage by users and consumers will be captured and the badge’s relevancy and usefulness will be assessed via user and consumer surveys. Findings will be sent to the badging committee for use in periodic review and evaluation processes. Findings could result in revisions to competencies, implementation, and participants.
