The Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences facilitates student and faculty research and collaborations with researchers outside the University.
The center is composed of a diverse group of neuroscientists. This diversity in neuroscience specialties, provides a unique opportunity for collaboration among center members, as well has new perspectives on one's research. The center continues to expanding and diversifying the neuroscience faculty at UNE through the recruitment of new faculty. Faculty also have accesses to:

- Mini-grants to cover research core invoices

Current Research: Fruit Flies and Chronic Pain
There are numerous research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students in neuroscience labs.
Over 200 students undergraduate students have rotated through neuroscience labs in the past 8 years! The majority of these students have gone on to pursue a career in science. Many of these students have presented their research at international conference, and contributed to publications.There are opportunities for students to self-lead a research project. UNE is part of The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Engineering (GSBSE), offered through the University of Maine. Students enrolled in this program and choose to do their thesis research in a one of the participating neuroscience labs at UNE. FMI please click here.
The Center of Biomedical Research Excellence for the Study of Pain and Sensory Function (COBRE) was established in 2012 through funding from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). The center is composed of a group of laboratories, within the Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences, who study the neurobiology of chronic pain. There are many opportunities for students in COBRE labs. For faculty, this center offers a a pilot project program, which provides funding for chronic pain research.
The COBRE also supports two state-of-the art research facilities, the Behavioral and Genotyping Core, and the Histology and Imaging Core, which carry out cutting-edge research. The two cores provide expertise and training and use of specialized instrumentation and both welcome internal and external users.
PAIN EDUCATION COLLABORATIVE
The Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences, along with UNE’s Center for Excellence in Collaborative Education (CECE), brings together groups of health care professionals, scientists, educators, scholars, and students who share a passion for transforming pain prevention, care, education, and research.
