Commission becomes NECHE

Earlier this year, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) completed a corporate restructuring to align with the U.S. Department of Education’s (USDOE) requirement that the higher education commission (CIHE) operate as a “separate and independent” entity.1 As a result of this restructuring, the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) is now recognized by the USDOE as the regional accreditor for institutions of higher education in the six New England states, including the University of New England.

From time to time, you may see UNE materials that still reference NEASC. For example, the University’s accreditation status was reaffirmed in 2017 — prior to the restructuring — so you will see references to NEASC in any documentation about that process. Please know that the restructuring in no way affects the accreditation status of the University. From our perspective, it is simply a name change.

Should you have questions about this matter or want more information about UNE’s accreditation status, please contact Michael Sheldon, PT, Ph.D., associate provost for Academic Affairs at msheldon@une.edu.
