Carmen Pettapiece Student Research Fellowships

Overview

The UNE COM Student Government Association established the Carmen Pettapiece Student Research Fund in an effort to support all areas of medically-oriented research conducted by UNE COM students. Students may apply for financial support through this fund in order to conduct a research project in osteopathic manipulative medicine, clinical, biomedical, or public health.

If applying for funding to complete a research project, the maximum amount awarded to any one student is between $1,000–$2,000. This amount will be dispersed in one allotment shortly after acceptance. Students will be required to present their research at the UNE COM Research Forum held in the fall. Those that do not have sufficient materials to present their projects in the fall, will be required to give a poster presentation about their research project in the coming Spring at the Maine Osteopathic Association (MOA) meeting New England Osteopathic Medical Education Network (NEOMEN) Research and Scholarship Forum. Carmen Pettapiece student fellows are required to provide a final report on their research project if they are unable to present their project in any of the approved research forums at or outside of UNE by the end of May. All current UNE COM students who are matriculated at the time of the award and in good academic standing are welcome to apply.

Application Process

  • Every applicant must identify a primary mentor to assist in the preparation of his/her application.
  • The mentor responsibilities include: Sponsoring and supervising the proposed research project, including providing the necessary resources for the project; assisting the applicant with the application process (BUT NOT WRITING THE PROPOSAL FOR THE APPLICANT); ensuring that the funded applicant completes all required training as per the instructions; stays on track with the research project; and aids in the preparation of required research presentation at the UNE COM Research Forum.
  • Students may utilize this award once per academic year.
  • Grant funding is competitive — therefore, students applying for funds through this grant must demonstrate the scientific merit of the research and how it will enhance the practice of medicine.
