Q: Are my counseling sessions confidential?
A: The counseling relationship is completely confidential within the legal and professional guidelines of the State of Maine and the American Counseling Association.
Information shared with us is kept separate from academic records and will not be released without your written consent, with the following exceptions: if there is indication of harm to self or other, if there is indication of abuse to a child or incapacitated elder, or if the court subpoenas the record.

Q: What are some of the reasons for which I might seek counseling?
A: People seek counseling for a variety of reasons and express their concerns in different ways. Some reasons include:
- Adjusting to college or a new academic program
- Relationship issues
- Loss of confidence or self esteem
- Food, eating and body issues
- Sexual issues
- Alcohol/drug use
- Anger management
- Difficult family situation
- Sleep issues
- Sexual assault
Q: What would the first session be like?
A: During the first session, your counselor will help you clarify and facilitate a method of dealing with your concerns. The counselor may suggest that you begin individual or group counseling, or refer you to another resource on campus or in the community.
Q: Is there a cost for counseling services?
A: As a UNE student, there is no fee for you to use the Student Counseling Center. Your health insurance company is not notified or billed for our services.
Q: How do I schedule an appointment?
A: You may schedule a session with a counselor by calling your Student Counseling Center.

Sessions are typically 50 minutes long and are scheduled by appointment. We are also available to respond to emergencies and crises.
